Smile Changing the cell colour based on what is input in another cell.

Sorry I am a bit of an Excel novice but I already know it is a wonderful thing.

I know what I want to do but can't work out how.

I have a column with cells of financial amounts.
I also have a column to say if this has been paid or not and this will either have a Y or N in it.

I wish to somehow set things so that in a third cell I can copy the financial amount but the cell colour will be dictated by the Y or N.

If a Y is entered the cell with the financial amount will turn Green and if an N is entered it will turn Red.

    So column A has £££$$$
    Column B has Y or N
Column C would have a duplicate of A but would be Green or Red according to Column B

I hope this makes sense and not sure if it's possible.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Thank you... that I can kinda do. But how do I copy the text from another cell AND add conditional formatting in the new cell?

Basically if I wanted to do this in my column A it would not be a problem. Unless I am missing something.

Look at the attached. I did this with conditional formatting. If you change Column B, then the colors change in Column C.

Thank you so much! That really helped make it clear. I think I am more visual but I have accomplished it now!

With regard to your PM which I have copied here for all to see.

The visual worked better for my mindset! I have now learnt something new thanks to you.

Is it possible to sum a column so it only counts the numbers formatted in red?
You cannot sum based upon the color, but use the criteria in column B.

ie. =SUMIF(B2:B8,"Y",C2:C8). This would give you the total of all cells in Range C2:C8 with the value of Y in range B2:B8

I hope this answers your question.
