Basic question about conditional summing

I have a spreadsheet of football players by position and yardage.

I want to separately sum up yardage by position, for example, TOTAL_HB_YDS, TOTAL_FB_YDS, etc.

Current columns are:

PlayerName PlayerPosition Yards

Can I do this using functions?

Should be able to do that. Now if the same position is occupied by more than one named player you may have to add a field where you concatenate the two then do the count by that.

if just total yds by position, then it would look like =sumif(range that "contains half back", criteria "half back" then sum range - the total yds column). =sumif(range,criteria,sumrange).
