Finding multiple peak values and reporting associated data

    Hi all,

I need Excel to find all peak values in Column B and report their value and corresponding data that is listed in Columns C and D. After searching the internet, I've used countif to determine the number of peak values and vlookup to find the first peak value, but I'm having difficulty with trying to get Excel to report all occurrences of max values. Unfortunately, the location of the subsequent peak values do not occur systematically.

If it helps, here's a sample of what I have thus far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Chad

Re: Finding multiple peak values and reporting associated data

The second occurence of torque=13.1 is the entry immediately following the 1st occurence. Is this really intended to be a 2nd peak, or do you want to consider this as part of the same peak?

Assuming you want to treat these as one peak, is it likely that there would ever be two separate "overall" max peaks with the same torque value?

With data like this, are you looking for the highest peak only, or do you want to find some of the lower peaks? For example the 12.1 peak at time 80 or the 11.8 peak at time 310/320.

Thanks, MrShorty, for your quick response.

It is likely that there would be two separate "overall" max peaks with the same torque value. My plan is to use the peak torque value and its corresponding POS (ANAT) value in a subsequent analysis. The POS (ANAT) is the joint angle position. So, my plan is to ultimately take the cosine of the joint position and multiply it by the peak torque value. Since this peak occurred at 2 different angles, I need both sets of data. I'm not interested in finding any of the lower peaks.

That answers that question. I'm still not sure if you want to consider the two 13.1 entries as separate peaks or as the same peak.

Does it have to be formulas? One possible approach would be to setup a filter on the table. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...339.aspx?CTT=1 By using the "Top 10" option and setting it to find the top 1, I quickly get both max entries, which I could then copy and paste elsewhere. Or even add the =cos(pos)*torque calculated for all entries in an adjacent column and the result will be right there. Exactly how you want to do it might depend on what you want to do with the data after that.

Re: Finding multiple peak values and reporting associated data

For the time being, I would treat them as separate peaks. Based on subsequent analysis, I would decide on which value to use.

It does not have to be a formula. The notion of filtering by top10 had never occurred to me. This will be easy and fast to implement to get the values I need. Ultimately, I want the largest value that would be something like =cos(pos)*torque. So, using the filter by top10 seems like a great start. By adding another column (Column E) that would include this latter function, I could have a cell that would identify the maximum value in Column E.

    Thanks for your help!
