Data Validation based on another Data Validation

hi there-

I have two sheets in a workbook.

sheet 1: a form where user gets to choose from a drop down menu (breakfast, lunch, or dinner)- column A
when the user chooses one of these, i want column B to display corresponding data for type of food chosen.

sheet 2: has the following information:

breakfast lunch dinner

eggs sandwich steak
ham salad chicken
toast burger fish

i tried various methods but no success. does anybody know how to solve this?

Hi and welcome to the forum

Take a look at using vlookup(). If that doesnt work, or you still have a problem, I would suggest you upload a sample work book, (all sensitive data removed), showing what data you are working with, a few examples of what your expected outcome is, and how you arrived at that
To attach a file to your post,
click advanced (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage file",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.

i tried lookup, but couldn't find a way still. i tried a lot of things with loopup and vlookup, but it was overly complicated and simply didn't work.

i'm attaching the file with comments. it's a really simple problem- i'm hoping i'm just really inexperience at this excel and could be shown a simple solution.

OK, take a look at the attached, it uses named ranges and indirect() for what you want
(I could do it for you, but then you would never learn how to do it yourself lol)

awesome. i messed around with named ranges to solve this very problem so i'm familiar with that. this is awesome thanks!!

so the unknown for me is the indirect function you used in conjunction with substitute. will study that a bit. and yeah, i agree with you re: learning as you do.
