Vlookup Index field Type Causing problems

I trying to perform a v-look up based on a column that contains Numeric, Alpha-numeric, as well as Alpha only characters. My vlookup produces a #N/A due to the field types of my look up field and my table index being different. I've tried setting both columns' cell types to General, Text, and Number but the vlookup doesnt work until I go to my table and select the cell being used as the index and then enter out of it. I have hundreds of records in my table and would prefer not to have to go through each record one at a time to correct this problem, Is anyone aware of an easier way to do this?

    Thank you.
