Excel 2007 Ctrl F Help - Very confused, please help!

Hoping someone can help! We've been using Excel 2007 to convert data by largely using the Ctrl F, Find & Replace feature. Today we ran into problems with excel not allowing us to paste data into the Ctrl F feature in excess of 255 characters, where we have never had issues before. I completed some data this morning using Ctrl F and those fields were around 500 characters, but now that document also is now limiting. To my understanding older versions of excel limited the data at 255 characters when using Ctrl F, but new versions allow in excess of 1000. It seems like some sort of setting has changed in our excel and I cannot figure out how to change it back? I've tried starting fresh with a new document thinking that we may have accidently saved the original workinng document in an older Excel format that limits it to 255 characters, but even with the new document, it is still limiting. Hope that all makes sense, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

If you start with an .xls file you need to first of all use File | Save As and save it as an Excel workbook (i.e. with an .xlsx extension). Close the file and then re-open it, and then you should have access to all the newer features.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for the idea Pete. I've tried to resave the file as you recommended previously, and the limitation still presists. Any other ideas?

Well, you could replace the contents with, say, the first 250 characters of the new string plus a unique string like "zzz", and then replace the "zzz" with the remaining characters.

Alternatively, you could type the new text into a cell somewhere, say Z1, and then use Find & Replace to change the old text with =Z1 (and similarly with other cells), and then fix all the values and delete cells Z1 etc.

    Hope this helps.
