# Calculating commissions with varying percentages based on running total

1. ## Calculating commissions with varying percentages based on running total

Hello,

I'm trying to building a spreadsheet that calculates a percentage of a certain value that changes based on the running total of values. There would be two columns (in addition to helper columns, perhaps?). One for the value and one for the running total. When a value makes the running total cross a threshold, the portion of that value (and not the running total, note) that only brings it up to and not across the threshold gets multiplied by the appropriate percentage and the portion that's left over gets multiplied by the next percentage and then they get added together. I've tried various things, like nested if statements, vlookup, etc. The formulas seem to break after a number crosses a threshold.

Going further, although I don't foresee this happening, a value might even push the running total across two thresholds! I'm not sure if any of this is even possible or if I'm just running in circles.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

any chance of a spreadsheet with various examples of the figures you want and what the results should be

Yes, of course! Note that the value in E12 is incorrect. It's just taking the commission amount and multiplying the whole thing by the second threshold percentage.

This have been solved elsewhere. Let me know if you'd like to see the solution or if I should just post it here.

I appreciate the guidance. I didn't solve it myself.

To be fair, I waited quite a while to update my reddit post before I received any response here. I fully endorse the posting of links to coss-posts.

Cheers.
