i need each cell of a ten thousand cell column to have conditional formatting based on the

Column E2:E10000 require individual conditional formatting if there is a particular value in the same row but in column AD.

If AD2 is equal to "NOK", apply conditional formatting to E2.

If I copy this format to the 10000th row, E10000 is still focused on AD2.
I understand about the $ sign, but can't change the automatic entry into the "Applies to" box of the conditional formatting rule manager. As soon as I click on the apply button of the conditional formatting rule manager, the $ signs come back.

    I hope somebody can help.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,

    Try entering

Please Login or Register to view this content.

as the formula used for conditionally formatting Cell E2. You should then be able to copy Cell E2 down through the column, and the formula will refer to the row in which it is entered.

Hope this helps - please let me know how you get on.

    Regards,

    Greg M

    Hi Greg M,
Yes that works for formatting cell E2 but if I copy the formatting down to row 10000, E10000 is still looking at the value in AD2.

The only way I can do it is if I apply conditional formatting to each cell in column E, individually, and that's not really practical.

    Thanks.

    Hi again,

    Thanks for your quick response.

I started with a new worksheet, entered NOK in Cell AD2 and used the formula =$AD2="NOK" to conditionally format Cell E2, which was then displayed using the formatting values specified.

I cleared the contents of Cell AD2, (Cell E2 returned to "normal" formatting), copied Cell E2 down as far as Cell E10000, (Cell E10000 was displayed using "normal" formatting), entered NOK in Cell AD10000, and Cell E10000 was then displayed using the conditional formatting values.

Are you sure you're using only a single dollar sign in the conditional formatting formula?

    Regards,

    Greg M
