    Countifs help... I think

I have the words "I think" in the title because I believe what I'm doing, or trying to accomplish is a "countifs" formula. Let me give you some background and we'll go from there...

I'm using Excel 2010. I have 45 rows of students names, followed by columns of dates. I want to input a "V" or a "JV" or an "E" into a cell. I want one of my cells to keep a running total of these. So no matter what I put in the cells (V, JV or E) I want it to add up in one cell.

The cells i'm utilizing are: D3:AN3 and obviously the next rows down for each of the 45 students will have the same formula. The running total will be kept in cell: A3, A4 and so forth again for each student.

Right now, I have the cells from D3:AN3 as drop down boxes with the V, JV & E that I'm wishing to use. When I tried using the =countifs formula, I entered all the criteria and ranges as it showed and when I enter the criteria (V, JV or E) no total is given.

Please help! Thank you in advance for any help!

Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to make it clear what is needed. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are demonstrated, mock them up manually if needed. Remember to desensitize the data.

In column A is where I'll need the formulas for the sum of all the "V, JV & E" and Column B is already figured out. That will keep the sum of all the red columns (Trnys).

My ultimate goal is to keep a running count of each name for Dates and for Trnys. Again, the problem I'm running into is the Dates.

I am working on a machine right now that has EXCEL 2002 on it. The best I can offer you is the syntax for the Countifs Function

    http://www.techonthenet.com/excel/formulas/countifs.php

    This should work.

Perhaps, you should post your Countifs formula here so we can analyze what you have and perhaps what it should be.

The formula I was using: =COUNTIFS(D3:AN3,"V",D3:AN3,"JV",D3:AN3,"E")
That was just for the 3 row. I would "fill down" the formula in the A column.

    Yes, different regional settings ( ; = , )

    - Countifs are only used when you want to count the number of times all criteria are met, not individually as you want.
