External link cannot be found resulted in many warnings messages

    Hi all,

I have a question regarding a warning message. In the source file (Data.xlsx, attached), I created a dynamic named range 'MIPS':

    =OFFSET(Sheet1!$A$2,,,COUNT(Sheet1!$A$2:$A$5000))

Then, in another file (Workbook.xlsx, attached), I tried to get some cell values of the named range MIPS, but this resulted in an error as below.

Microsoft Excel cannot find 'MIPS' on "Data.xlsx". There are two possible reasons:

The name you specified may not be defined.
The name you specified is defined as something other than a rectangular cell reference.
Check the name and try again.

I had to dismiss this message manually before the update can proceed. Can I ask why it happened? Is there a way to use some Excel setting or macro to suppress this warning message?

    Hello BNCOXUK,

It is not easy to provide you with a ready solution, without seeing the Code which generates these messages, but you could try adding at the beginning of your Code:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
Of course you should restore the False setting back to True, at the end of that particular Code.

Do I have to use macro, or there is some setting available in Excel 2010 to suppress these warning messages when something cannot be found?

    Hello BNCOXUK,

Sorry, I just assumed that your issue was VBA related.

Now it would appear that you are actually referring to Workbook Data Links. I do not have Excel 2010, and unfortunately I cannot compare or comment on how to tweak the Excel Settings to overcome your problem.

I am confident though that someone else may come to our rescue here.

    Regards.

I think the problem is that the named range in the source file may not exist. That is why there is such warning message when the data cannot be retrieved from the named range.

    Still waiting for someone's help.

    Did you try this?
    -when the warning window appears:
    -Edit Links
    -Start Prompt
-Don't display the alert and don't update auto links
    -Save yr file!

Re: External link cannot be found resulted in many warnings messages

    Hi John55,

Actually the link needs to be updated. But the objective is that: if the named range in the source file does not exist, then simply don't pop out the warning message. In Excel 2003, there won't be any warning message even if the named range does not exist. But since our Excel has been upgraded to 2010, then every time if the named range in the source file does not exist, the warning message automatically appears, such as:

Microsoft Excel cannot find 'CAuto' on "FGP.xls". There are two possible reasons:

The name you specified may not be defined.
The name you specified is defined as something other than a rectangular cell reference.
Check the name and try again.
