Set text to a numerical value and be able to sum the values when highlighted

Each column would have a value, say, 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. Each column would represent a game with two opponent choices. The rows represent the participants in the pool who will choose a winner of that particular game. I'd like to be able to set each cell with the appropriate value, highlight the winning choices (of the two for each column after the game is played) and have the total calculated in a later column by summing only the highlighted cells. Can this be done?
The other option I was thinking was to delete choices that were wrong and sum only those cells that had text so as to avoid the presumed difficulty with highlighting. Of course, this way would seem to set a pre-established total and then deduct from that total (which I'm not crazy about).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Set text to a numerical value and be able to sum the values when highlighted

Thanks, I actually saw this document earlier in another thread and it certainly looks like something that will work, however I'm having trouble setting the cells with an underlying value of 5 or 10 or 15, etc. but showing the name of the participant's choice for the winning team in the cell. I would highlight the cells that showed the winning team and sum only those highlighted cells in a row to get a total. But I need the cell to have a numerical value while showing the name of the team. I'm trying to avoid having to set each team using IF or VLOOKUP because there are some sixty teams in this pool.

can you attach a sample spreadsheet and show what you mean

    i thought you had

    Column A = team
and then column B,c,d,e would have 5,10,15,20 in each cell
and so you would highlight the winning cell - and wanted to add those up
    i clearly have misunderstood completely

Okay, I've attached an example of what I'm talking about. The real sheet would have at least 35 columns for the different bowl games. The rows would vary depending on the number of people that joined the pool. So, in effect every cell in a column will be worth the amount listed in the row marked "Point Value." After the results of the game become known, I'll determine which team is highlighted. Only the highlighted cells will get counted in a row for a total.

thanks for the example, that clears up what you need - however, my expertise in VBA is very limited and to do anything with a filled cell, you will need VBA to calculate it out
