VLOOKUP or INDEX MATCH where the reference MATCH cell has a formula behind it

    Hi,

I am trying to create a lookup formula where the cell value to match has a formula behind it.

    For example: =INDEX(AR7:AR371,MATCH(G28,AE7:AE371,0))

The trouble I'm having is that the value in G28 is derived from a formula and the Index Match formula then gives a #N/A result. If I change the value in G28 (a date) manually, so directly enter a date, the Index Match formula works ok.

Is there any way of getting the Index Match formula to work, or Vlookup would also do although that at the moment that has the same problem with G28 having a formula behind it.

This is probably due to the fact that the value returned by your formula in G28 is text looking like number or the opposite.
Perhaps post a sample sheet where the original value leading to the value in G28 is shown

Re: VLOOKUP or INDEX MATCH where the reference MATCH cell has a formula behind it

    Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, I've been away from a PC since I posted my question.

I have attached a page from my file to show an example of what is happening. The data from AA2 to AC1000 comes in from another work book and the data in AF7 to AQ371 collates comments by date into a single cell in the AR column. In the example file I have included some dummy comments for the 6th of Jan which are collated in cell AR12.

I am using the date fields in AE12 and G28 in my INDEX MATCH formula to bring in the comments from AR12. The date in C27 comes from a lookup table when the week number is selected on another sheet which updates cell H1. The Sunday to Friday dates are simply updated by adding 1 and I have the dates formatted as a custom date format.

The INDEX MATCH formula fails when the date in G28 is used but works fine if the date in O28 is used in the formula which I've entered manually. So it appears that if the G28 cell is used with the '=G27+1' formula behind it doesn't work.

    Hi,

Not sure I understand. The dates in cells G28 and O28 differ by an entire calendar year.
