Highlight a cell based on data in another cell - condition formatting or formula??

I would like to highlight a cell with the color green when some type of data is entered into another cell, such as a date or numbers (like mileage).
What do I use to make this happen? I've used conditional formatting before to change the cell format based on data within the same cell, so I don't know if I should be looking at a formula or some other function that I haven't used before. Help!

use conditional formating with the rule based on formula co : Conditional Formating -> New rule -> Use formula ...
and the formula you use (to create a rule for conditional formatting) could be for instance (if your mileage is to be written in D5)
