Need Help with finding number of times something appears

Hi everyone, I have a problem that I would appreciate help with.

I have 2 columns with thousands of cell, in the "A" column i have names and then in the "B" column I have a matching number.

I would like to know if its possible to count the number of times a specific name appears and then have it put into a field with the name in one cell and the number of times it occurs in the cell next to it.

I have looked into the "COUNTIF" formula but that requires you to enter the specific name you are looking for and with thousands of unique names it makes no sense to use this

Select a cell in the column you want to count (any cell). Select the Insert tab and choose Pivot Table.

Choose where you want to put the Pivot Table ... somewhere on the current sheet, or on a new sheet.
Click on the header in the dialogue box and drag it to both Row Labels and Values
Click on the "x" to close the Field List dialogue box.

And there you have a count of all the different values.
