SUMIF by Multiple conditions including calendar month

Hello,

I'm trying to incorporate a reference to dates for the following formula's and it's not working. Can someone help me add a condition to only sum or average these columns (respectively) by month?

=AVERAGEIFS('[AUX Data 2014.xlsx]MASTER'!$K$3:$K$58980,'[AUX Data 2014.xlsx]MASTER'!$A$3:$A$58980,$A$2)

and

=SUMIFS('[AUX Data 2014.xlsx]MASTER'!$A$3:$A$58980,$A$2,'[AUX Data 2014.xlsx]MASTER'!$K$3:$K$58980)
