Obviously, I must be doing something wrong. I have a column that contains text (ex: 28 years, 11 months). I would like to retain only the first two characters (28). When I tried the LEFT function [ =LEFT(D2,2) ] in a new column to the right of my column of text, the formula shows up in the cell, but no calculation takes place. Thanks.
This would mean that the cell is formatted as text, or that you currently have Show Formulas enabled.
You can toggle Show Formulas with Ctrl+` (next to the 1 key)
If the cell is formatted as text, instead go up to Number under the Home tab, and choose the General from the dropdown menu. Then double click the cell and hit enter to have it re-evaluate.
