Difference between Inclusive and Exclusive Percentile function

I have 20 scores. They are:

    75
    77
    78
    78
    80
    81
    81
    82
    83
    84
    84
    84
    85
    87
    87
    88
    88
    88
    89
    90

Let's say I want to identify what number corresponds to the 75th percentile. When I use the Inclusive Percentile function I get 87.25. When I use the exclusive percentile function I get 87.75.

Why do I get different numbers? What is the difference between the Inclusive vs. Exclusive Percentile function?

Re: Difference between Inclusive and Exclusive Percentile function

    Hi,

I remember working on this stuff back in college. I remember one formula was divided by how many numbers you had and the other one was one less as a fudge factor. See the formulas at the bottom of:
    http://www.macroption.com/population...ard-deviation/

So if you divide by a smaller number you get a bigger answer. The bigger answer in your case of 87.75 is a little bigger just in case you didn't get to use ALL the data. That means you are excluding some of the data and are taking a sample of the whole thing. Note - for large sets of data say 1000 numbers, dividing by 1000 or 999 makes very little difference.

    I hope this helps.
