Document Recovery panel keeps bringing up a file that doesn't exist - causing crashes!

Working with shared Excel files on our Sharepoint, I open a file today, and the Document Recovery panel comes up and tells me it recovered this file from an April 8th version, and is calling it the "Original" version. I ignore that, as this latest version is good. But when I try to hit save on this version from today, it crashes Excel. Re-open Excel, and I get that same April 8th version show up in the Doc Recovery panel.

I have deleted all traces of the April 8th version from Sharepoint, including its Recycle Bin. I have also deleted everything out of C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel.

What else can I do to get Excel to stop trying to look at this April 8th version? Are there other caches on my HDD that I need to delete?

Thanks in advance, this is driving me batty.

Can you save the file under a new name?

You could try running Ccleaner from www.piriform.com (the free version) to clean out temporary files that may still exist for this problem file.

Hi and thanks for the reply. Well perhaps what I originally thought was causing crashes is not the cause. I downloaded and ran Ccleaner. I opened the newest version of the file in Excel, and there is now no Doc Recovery panel. I then thought, problem solved. But when I try to save the file, Excel still crashes. Even more baffled now.

The file could be corrupted. You might be able to copy one worksheet at a time into a new workbook and salvage it that way.

The only reason I'm sure the file isn't corrupted and it has something do with my versioning and/or recovery aspects of the file, is the other 3 people here who use it are having no issues with it at all.

Do you have another user account you could try using as this could be a User Account problem? Have you done a repair of Office in the Control Panel?

If you don't have a second user account on your computer that you can use, you can easily create one for testing purposes.

Sure I can try that. I'll have one of the other users who are not having problems with this file come log in to my pc with their credentials which will create a new user account for them. I'll test with that and report back.

As far as repairing Office goes, it appears I need to have Administrator privileges to make changes in the Programs & Features, which I don't. I'll see if I can get someone who does.

    Thanks for your continued help.
