    Question Excel on iPad

I have a worksheet that I have made up on my Desktop using Excel 2013, I have now made it Protected on my Desktop. I have saved the protected file onto 'One Drive' which is required for the iPad to load it from. Now when I attempt to open the protected copy on my iPad all it will do is load the file to the stage it was prior to making it a protected copy. How Can I get around this please ?

    Regards

    Peter

    Hi Richard
Yes the file can be loaded when its unprotected, but only if it's unprotected when loaded into One Drive before loading to iPad. if I load it to One Drive protected and then unprotect in One Drive when loaded to iPad it says 'can not save saved by different user' or something similar can't remember exact message.

    Regards

I have Excel 2013 on this laptop and my iPad - I'll see if I can replicate your problem here, Peter.

    Re: Excel on iPad

OK, well I've tried a simple two-sheet workbook, and adding extra stuff at each stage:

    1. With the workbook protected, it loads fine in Excel for iPad (as read only, of course).
    2. With one sheet of the workbook protected, it loads fine in Excel for iPad.
    3. With one sheet and the workbook both protected, it loads fine in Excel for iPad.

What exactly is your protection? Worksheet or workbook level, or both? Is this a shared file?

    Re: Excel on iPad

    Addendum:

Even using protect and share, I can't replicate your issue. What isn't possible on the iPad, though, is to work directly on the protected sheet: all you can do is save a duplicate and work on that, but the protected sheet(s) will not be editable, as password protection is not supported on iPad. All content remains visible, though.

How exactly are you 'unprotecting it in OneDrive'?

How are you opening it on the Ipad, using the webview or the office app?

Are you asking me or the OP or both? I'm using Excel for iPad, as I stated in my post (i.e. the MS Office 365 (2013) app). It's part of my Office 365 subscription. I assumed that Peter was doing the same, but you're right: maybe he's trying to access it differently.

    Re: Excel on iPad

I was asking the OP as it's something that I would envisage would make a difference. I've never used it, so I can't really help here, but my understanding is that you can't Edit Excel documents on the Ipad without a 360 subscription - seemed like something that had been skipped over that would be worth establishing

There were 365 days in the year last time I looked ...

Yes, you are right: Excel for iPad is free to use as a reader, but to edit files, you need an Office 365 subscription. It will be interesting to read Peter's response, but as he's in Oz, and as it's about 6:38pm in Sydney, he's probably having his supper at the moment!!!

I am protecting it with 'Protect Worksheet' not Protect Workbook.

With the File loaded protected into One Drive I open it from within One Drive click on Unprotect Worksheet and then save to One Drive, then open it in iPad

I was assuming that I would be able to use it exactly the same on my iPad as I do on my desktop.

This is what is confusing me as it is coming with can't save, make duplicate, etc it's just confusing jargon and I don't know which way to go with it.

    Re: Excel on iPad

If you are using the app in the iPad as opposed to the apps available via OneDrive online, then no, the functionality is limited in the iPad app. I don't know about using the online app, as I didn't try that. The iPad app is useful for viewing files and making minor adjustments, but I wouldn't use it for proper work on a spreadsheet: I'd use my laptop for that.

yes I am using the app in the iPad, I don't know where / how to access the APP via OneDrive, can you explain how l can do this please. I only have a desktop and now my iPad and I have the need to add / change information in my spread sheet whilst I am on the move driving to different locations.

If you mean thru the iPad I haven't tried that, didn't realize that I could. I have only had iPad for a couple of weeks still learning how to use it. I assume you thru safari. Give me ten minutes and I will try.

That's what I'd try, yes. If that launches the iPad app, then the iPad app it will have to be.

I'm not sure what I've got here now, it appears to opened my file with a slightly different layout, not my spread sheet layout, but the ribbons are different and a lot more of them and I can view the spreadsheet but have no navigation movement around the spreadsheet or keyboard functions to change anything.

OK - so it seems you've opened it in the online app. I would have thought you'd be able to navigate.

    Re: Excel on iPad

I've just opened a file within the browser on my laptop, and although it's navigable, there is no access to protection features. It is limited in a similar way to the iPad app.

    Re: Excel on iPad

I have opened the same file in the online app via Safari on my iPad, and it is navigable by touch (no scrollbars necessary) and I can edit it. If your worksheet is protected, then you won't be able to edit anything on that sheet and there is no way that I can see to unprotect the sheet via this app. Hope this answers your question.

    Re: Excel on iPad

I think this is because the worksheet is protected. I get the keyboard as soon as I click (touch) into the formula bar, which is where your text or number entry would occur. Is this not happening? If not, then the worksheet must be locked.
