Text to Column function (normally used to convert text to number/general format)

    Hi all,

I got a question from someone that struck my mind out of nowwhere regarding the Text to column.
Normally, I will use Text to Column when the column A is known as text format, which I will highlight that column A, Click text to column and click finish.
Hence, that column A format will all be in number / General format, which I can proceed further with any formulae

Somehow, what does this Text to Column function actually use for?
And how come I can convert the column A from text to number/general format?

    Appreciate the feedback.

    Thanks

    Regards

    Hi cks1026

Text to column is used where a column consists of cells containing more than one type of data, eg 13/2/14,abc,123,xyz

As long as ALL cells contain the same layout in (say) columns A, then using text to column you can spread the last 3 items into columns B,C and D. You are offered a choice as to how to split: either as fixed width which will only work if the width of each element of the cell is the same as the one above, or using any specified character as the break (in my example a comma "," ).

To change any column from text to number/general, select the column,go to the home tab where, in the centre you will see a drop down menu from where you can choose any formatting.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards
    Alastair
