AFAIK you would need to add Shapes via VBA over the indicators to show a different colour.

No, there is no setting to change the color of the red triangle comment indicator.
If you Google "Excel change comment indicator color" you'll come across an ugly alternative that actually uses VBA programming to draw triangular shaped boxes over the original indicators, and of course you can color those any color you want. This amount of plumbing for such a trivial gain I would never directly recommend. But it's out there. Ugh.
