    Multiple versions opening automatically

When I open an excel 97-2003 workbook in excel 2010, multiple versions are automatically opened & hidden. In order to close and save the workbook properly, I have to unhide each version and close each one at a time. Why is this happening and how do I stop it from doing this automatically each time I open a workbook?

Do you mean you get multiple windows with :1, :2 at the end of the captions in the title bar?

    Yes!

I think I found an answer to fix it but I don't understand why this happened to begin with. There are a number of workbooks with this issue and it will take me a long time to go in and re-save each one without the multiple versions. Any ideas?
