    IF LEFT function

Hello, I am trying to build a formula in Cell D1 (down to D100)

It is based around wheat is in A1 (down to A100).

Some of the data in A1 is pure number, some is pure text, and some is a mixture.

What I want D1 to do, is, if the first character in A is a number, then show it in D1. If it's text (or a non number) show blank ""

    Re: IF LEFT function

    Maybe:
    =IFERROR(--LEFT(A1,1),"")

    Re: IF LEFT function

Hello regulduy, thanks - I should have said that some of the numbers are 4 digits as well. Your formula seems to work, but only returns the first digit (I use that as a check to see if the cell contains a number)

    Re: IF LEFT function

That's a bit tricker, try something like:
    =LEFT(A1,MAX(IF(ISNUMBER(--LEFT(A1,ROW(A$1:A$1000))),ROW(A$1:A$1000),"")))
as an array formula (confirm with ctrl+shift+enter)
