How to open an xlsx file that is password protected, in Excel 2007

I inherited an Excel spreadsheet that is password protected, and I cannot gain access to it. I tried to change the file to a zip file and open it, but that does not work. I am on a network computer and our access to various programs is limited in terms of security, so I am not sure if that is why the .zip action will not work.
