Hi, a complete excel newbie here on his third day at his first job.

    Hey everybody,

I'm new here and I'll be visiting this forum a lot because this new job I got requires me to do a lot of excel work.

    Anyways, here's the question.

I have 120 cells in a row which basically looks like this...

    Stack Chairs - 2nd Floor Warehouse (1/122)
    Stack Chairs - 2nd Floor Warehouse (1/122)
    Stack Chairs - 2nd Floor Warehouse (1/122)
    Stack Chairs - 2nd Floor Warehouse (1/122)
    Stack Chairs - 2nd Floor Warehouse (1/122)

Is there anyway I could just change the numbers in order without changing the texts?
I already asked my supervisor and he basically told me that it's impossible because once the cells are written in texts it will only read as texts.

    Thanks in advance !

Assuming those are going into Cell A1, A2, A3, and so on use
    ="Stack Chairs - 2nd Floor Warehouse ("&B1&"/122)"
Copy and paste this to as many rows as you need.

In cell B1 put the number 1
in cell B2 put the number 2
select Cells B1 and B2, and mouse over the bottom right hand corner until you get a black + cursor, then click and drag it down as far as you need. The numbers will increment. You can also do this to copy and paste A1

In future posts, (and this one!), please use a title that is related to the question being asked, and you will be more likely to get answers more quickly

    Welcome to the forum

Thank you for the quick response.

Unfortunately this is in D column and I'm about 700 down.
Columns A-K are all full of information and I can't have random numbers showing on the report..

and yes! I tried to change the title but I don't think I can. Thanks for the tip anyways !

You can insert a column to store the numbers and then hide it so it's not visible. Right click on any column title for "insert" and "hide" options.

    Simply adjust the formula

    ="Stack Chairs - 2nd Floor Warehouse ("&B1&"/122)"
And put the numbers in another column somewhere

    Or, try this

    ="Stack Chairs - 2nd Floor Warehouse ("&ROW(1:1)&"/122)"

Start with the first row, and just copy that formula down and it will increment for you

    This worked like a charm.

    Thank you Speshul.

Btw the method you suggested where you hide the columns doesn't really work well for me.

the number part the actual numeric part is just blank... so you only see this (/120)
