Groupwise numbering

I have a list of report of a persons experience database with various campanies. I want that to be sorted based on their experience and also the same should be numbered like below.

Ex: EMP Name
A 1
A 2
A 3

B 1
B 2
B 3
B 4
B 5
B 6

This seems to be a minimal information problem. You're not giving much detail and w/o a sample it is difficult to determine.
So, why not use the custom sort feature in excel, sort on one column ascending then add a level and sort on the next column ascending?
