Formula in cell dictating column width-not col width setting

I have a data entry spreadsheet that contains many input fields. Some of these fields have formulas in them in order to set a default value, or conditionally add text to the cell with highlighting, etc. When the user first clicks on a cell with a formula in it, it appears that the column width is the appropriate size. But, as soon as one character is added the column width jumps to the size of the formula (which could be fairly long). Data entry moves from left to right. When the column width becomes too large, it blocks the view for the next field or two. It would not be very feasible to expand all the columns with formulas in them. Do you have any other ideas to keep these column widths as they are initially defined?

Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Re: Formula in cell dictating column width-not col width setting

I cannot attach a file that will show you what I'm explaining. If I type the first character into the cell with a formula, the cell widens. Then if I immediately go to save, upon saving, the cell automatically returns to the correct size. When I open it to see what happened, the cells are the correct size, but the issue still remains.

Once the cell with the formula is widened because the user has started to enter a value in the cell, the cell will remain widened. The width of the cell may cover the cell to its right (the next entry cell). The user would not be able to click to the next cell to the right, and continue entering values. They would have to press enter/or -> which takes them to another cell (above, below or even diagonally) which they can now navigate FROM in order to get to the correct next cell...not very user friendly.

Essentially, the entry of a value into a cell that contains a formula, will widen to the length of the formula, rather than the pre-defined column width. How do I get these cells (columns) to remain at the pre-defined column width? I am using Excel 2007.

    Thank you!
