    Sum of cells that hold specific data

    Hi
    I have a spreadsheet that holds values in cells equaling LD and N - I want to add up the column so that it shows me the number on N as a total and LD as a numerical total.
    I have tried sum and sum if but i am not getting very far.
    Any help appreciated.
