Question Excel Pro 2002 dose not open with workbook

There are two users on my computer. I am the admin and when I open Excel no workbook comes up. I have to manually open a workbook but it is not attached to the formula/status bar. I have tried the "excel.exe /n" and get the message that the file cannot be found. When I log in as my husband, not the admin, starting Excel 2002 DOES come up with a workbook. I have checked all of the Tools/Options tabs and they are identical. Wednesday (the 17th) Excel started properly and then Thursday (the 18th) it was messed up.

Why would the same installation of Office Pro 2002 work properly with an ordinary user and a different way with the admin? And why would it change from one day to the next when there was no change in any settings?

Whether Ms-Office showing in your program list?

May be it is installed for that user profile alone?

How do you start Excel? If it's from a shortcut, perhaps it has the /e switch add to its command line.

Office was installed on the computer sometime PRIOR to June of 2010. It was working properly for both my husband AND myself just two days ago. Then yesterday (and today) it was not. IE, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are each listed under "All Programs" separately. We both have a shortcut on our desktops and it also shows up on both "Start" lists.

When I go to Start/Programs/Microsoft Excel it opens with the dis-connected workbook. I also went to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Excel.exe and got the same results. When I check the Control Panel it shows a "Last Used" date of 06/09/2010 which is the day I purchased the computer. This makes no sense to me as I use Excel Daily!

Re: Excel Pro 2002 dose not open with workbook

I put the OfficeXP Version 2002 Media Content CD into my machine about 5 minutes ago, ran "Setup.exe" and now it is simply sitting on my screen and when I click on "Next" I get the message that I need to wait while it checks my disk space requirements. Just how long should this take? I've never had this delay with any other installation. "My Computer" shows that the "C" drive has 11.6GB free space. This looks to me that I won't be able to repair/reinstall Excel. The help only tells me what each option does - Add/Remove, Repair, Uninstall.

I then put in the OfficeXP Professional Version 2002 CD and ran setup.exe. This gave me the option to repair or install. I ran repair but the same problem exists. I then ran install and I don't get any option to install only the Excel portion of Office. My difficulty here is I don't want to lose (or have to export) all of our Outlook data by re-installing everything when my only difficulty is with Excel. It looks like I will have to either live with the problem or log in as my husband to get the Excel I want to use and hope that it doesn't blow up as well. I know that there IS a way to get what I want but cannot find the correction necessary. The forum has given me many possible solutions but none seem to work!

It sounds to me that Excel's registration for your account has become corrupted. The instructions at this site might be able to get you going again.

Re: Excel Pro 2002 dose not open with workbook

    BINGO!!!

About 1/2 hour ago I was using Excel and had the detached workbook. I logged out after completing what I was doing. Then, about 10 minutes ago I needed to go back in so clicked on Excel from the Start Menu and WHOOPEE!!! it opened showing "Microsoft Excel - Book One" across the top. I don't know what happened but it looks like it FIXED ITSELF!

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.

Thanks for the feedback. Did you by chance get a Windows Update around that period? My AutoPlay mysteriously started to work again this week.

If that takes care of your original question, please select Thread Tools from the menu link above and mark this thread as SOLVED. Thanks.

Re: Excel Pro 2002 dose not open with workbook

No updates to my knowledge. I am using XP-Pro and Office-Pro and, as you know, XP-Pro is no longer supported by MS. I don't know for sure about Office Pro but there was no message on my screen about any updates being available. I suspect that just like the start of the problem, the fix occurred spontaneously.

Thanks for asking. (PS - I thought that I marked it solved after doing my last reply - I'll try again.)
