trouble converting numbers into phone format

i have been getting many sheets where the phone number is not formatted in (###) ###-####, if the column the number is in is text i can reformat by adding a column, formatted that column for phone numbers, converting old data to numbers and just do =a1, etc... in the new column.. the problem is they are not usually in text format, usually general formatting. So when i try this i just get the same formatting.. is there a formula or function that would help.

You need to supply examples of the original phone number. Make sure the data covers the different variations.

Re: trouble converting numbers into phone format

nah that didn't work.. it isn't there as text its just as general.. if it was it would be easier

    718-222-2222

so the number is typed like that.. in a text looking format (cell format general)

    I want this

    (718) 222-2222
