    9 box grid

    Hey

I hope to articulate myself as best as possible.

What I need has already been dealt with by Jerry on this link via this http://en.allexperts.com/q/Excel-105...9-box-grid.htm . I tried copying the formula but I failed.

I have exact similar queries as above. Basically, we have a number of employees (over 500) each of whom has been rated on their potential and performance to identify talent for development and succession planning. These rates were send by managers who chose from the following list (I - Under Performer, H - Satisfactory Contributor, G - Good Performer, F - Future Achiever, E - Solid Performer, D - Strong Performer, C - Early Promise, B - High Potential, and A - Star Performer).

Now that all the employees have been rated, I would like to auto-populate the data so that each staff can appear in their relevant position in the 9-box grid (3 rows of three) as indicated diagrammatically in the 2nd tab of the workbook. I would like them in the present colours and the actual spreadsheet will have more headings.

I wanted to included further grouping (job grading) in the grid but feel that at this stage all I need is to know how I can dynamically populate this data.

Most grateful for assistant in this matter. I have no preference whether the codes are formula-based or vha-based (would like your advice on which is most suited).

    Thanks very much

    Re: 9 box grid

Here is the workbook expanded to accommodate many entries. Having 500 names to deal with, it is unlikely that there will be an even distribution of ratings. I have expanded this to allow 100 entries per box. You may need more. To expand the boxes, select all boxes under the area that needs more room (all three columns) and drag down to create the space required. Then copy the formula down in the are that needs the expansion.

I made no attempt to use the letter designations but used the Data Validation list already in place and changed the entries to match your ratings.

Thumbs up Re: 9 box grid

Hey Ron, most grateful. This looks good! I'll definitely use it but would also like to hear what others think. Have a wonderful weekend.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm not sure how useful this kind of presentation is for the amount of data being presented. If given a choice I would go for maybe colour coding the ratings beside the names then just use filtering and sorting to get the desired results.

This might work for what I need, how might I add more than 118 lines of data, I can't seem to get the index formula to work. I have 900 employee names

    Re: 9 box grid

Change the 118's to something like 1000. That is what is limiting the rows.
