    lookup or match formula?

    Hi,

I have a workbook with two worksheets. On both worksheets there is an identical columns (serial numbers), but not identical data. One worksheet (worksheet A) has the username that the serial number is attached to, the other worksheet (worksheet b)does not have the username. I need to create a formula that looks at worksheet B determines the serial number, finds the same serial name on Worksheet A, then takes the username attached to worksheet A and populates the username field in Worksheet B..

Can anyone help.. I tried to create an IF statement and a lookup, but cannot seem to get it right.

    Thank you in Advance

    Re: lookup or match formula?

From worksheet B, perform a "=VLOOKUP" of the serial number on worksheet B and have it extract the username.

    Hi, welcome to the forum

    Try this...
    =VLOOKUP(A1,Sheet1!$A$1:$B$3,2,0)

If you need to error-trap for instances where there is no match, try this...
    =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A1,Sheet1!$A$1:$B$3,2,0),"Not Found")

    Re: lookup or match formula?

Insert the formula in the cell at the top of the column where you want the names to start and enter this formula with the proper cell references. Copy down the column where you want the names to appear.

    =INDEX(WORKSHEET_A_NAMERANGE,MATCH(WORKSHEET_B_SERIALNUMBER AT TOP OF COLUMN,WORKSHEET_A_SERIALNUMBER RANGE,0))

    To trap errors

    =IFERROR(INDEX(WORKSHEET_A_NAMERANGE,MATCH(WORKSHEET_B_SERIALNUMBER AT TOP OF COLUMN,WORKSHEET_A_SERIALNUMBER RANGE,0)),"")

This simple example should give you an idea of how to implement your solution of choice.
