Recognizing Two Cells Match then Copy New Information

    columns.PNG

I'm really just trying to understand if there is a faster way to do what I need with my spreadsheet. Above is a quick version of what information I have. What I need is to be able to read column C, find a match in column B and then when it finds a match to copy column A (next to the match from column B) into column d.

However, I'd be thrilled if you can in any way shorten the time on this task at all. I have 14,000 of these addresses.
I'm just trying to figure out the best way in which to do this.

    Thanks in advance!

Index / match can do that for you.
Notice my main language is not English.

    Hi,

To elaborate on oeldere's point, you may want to try using (the most basic form):
    =index(B:B,match(C1,B:B,0))

Enter the abovementioned in any Row 1 and drag it down the column

Any chance you can break down what the parts mean so I can understand better? In basic form, your formula just takes column C and copies those addresses into column D. What I'm looking for is for the column C to find its match in column B (whether it's two down or 40 down) and then copy whatever is in column A next to the match. I'm trying to understand your formula in an attempt to modify for me but I'm just getting lost. I really appreciate any help you can give, plus the help you've already given. Thanks!

Re: Recognizing Two Cells Match then Copy New Information

Hi there! I'm completely green with Excel, whenever I think there has to be a quicker/easier way I usally just GOOGLE it and sure enough I find an answer, fab! Now I'm trying something a little more tricky and there are lots of variations of users comparing/updating/duplicating online and I'm not sure which solution is the one I want. However this thread is the most similar issue I can find....

Here's what I'm doing.... I have two Excel documents - one contains last year's asset entries (Doc 1). I now have this year's assets listed (Doc 2) and I want to update the previous document with the updates.

    Column A = Item Numbers

    Column B = Room Location

Is there a way for Excel to identify the Item numbers from both documents and update Doc 1 room locations from Doc 2? So Coloumn A should stay the same, but Column B will have changed if the items have moved room location. If I go by this previous Post I could put all my data into one workbook and Columns A/B/C/D to compare B with C, then match up info from Column A to D. My problem is I dont understand formulas at all! I think Index Match may be the way but I can't make sense of how to make it work for me.

I'm currently comparing the rows side-by-side in my screen and manually changing the room locations - there's over 10,000 rows I have attached a screenshot of what I'm currently working on. Thank you for any help!
