Conditional formatting help (copying a rule)

I'd like to have the highest and lowest values in a row be a different colour than the rest of the cells. This is a simple conditional formatting issue when there is only one line. The problem is I want to do it for many rows but if I select all the rows to make the rule it only gives the highest and lowest of the whole selection. Is there a way to copy a rule, or create a rule shortcut so I can apply the rule to each row?

    Thanks

    use a formula
so assuming the row is column A to J

    Select columns A to J

    then use conditional formatting
    Formula
=A1=MAX($A1:$J1) - format the colour you want
    and
=A1=MIN($A1:$J1) - format the colour you want

I'm not sure this does what I'm looking for or that I follow the suggestion. What I want is the highest and lowest in row a to be certain colours, and the same thing for b, c etc.

That is exactly what this CF does...

Interesting. This formatting ( =Q54=MAX($Q54:$T54) - blue ) seemed to turn the cell blue but instead of a number in the cell it said #name?

    =Q54=MAX($Q54:$T54)

What Range are you looking for
    Q to T

for 2007 or 2010 excel version
    Conditional Formatting

    Highlight applicable range >>
    Q:T

Home Tab >> Styles >> Conditional Formatting
New Rule >> Use a formula to determine which cells to format
Edit the Rule Description: Format values where this formula is true:

    =Q1=MAX($Q1:$T1)

    Format… [Number, Font, Border, Fill]
choose the format you would like to apply when the condition is true
    OK >> OK

Re: Conditional formatting help (copying a rule)

etaf's explanation is great. Here is a workbook that has an example using his formulae in the Conditional Formatting and another example using the same logic but different functions. The cell references are changed only to match the examples given.

I added a small edition to etaf's solution added rule =A1="" and formatted No Colour

    Oops....file munged up.
