Conditional Formatting cells based on another cells contents

So I was able to find and follow this detail: http://database.ittoolbox.com/groups...r-cell-4625040 to get a worksheet formatted to change protected status of cells based on a single cell.

My question is related to changing many rows based on inputs in each row. Is it both possible and practical.

I have anywhere from 20-100 rows in each workbook that I would like to format to only allow input once other cells are entered to ensure that the proper data is submitted back to me.

Any thoughts or ideas. I didn't think it was practical for resources to have it running but I thought I would ask all the same.

    Thanks,
    SMLS

    This can be done.

    1. First select the cell to which you want to apply conditional formating.
    2. Click the conditional formating tab.
    3. Select new rule option
    4. Under that select use formula to determine which cell to format.
    5. Add the function by refering the cell based on which the conditional value has to be changed ( Make sure that the reference shound not contains dollar sign)
    6. change the formating as required.
    7. Click ok
    8. drag and drop to apply the conditional formating to other cells

I understand how to conditional format, I just can't get it to work in this context with text occurring in the targeted cell. The problem is getting the word to pop up in the box when a condition is met in a different cell.

I tried to articulate the problem in this workbook: conditional question.xlsx

    Thanks,

You can use Data Validation to prevent entry in cells if other cells are not filled in.

Select the cells that you don't want filled in unless other cells are filled in and then click on Data Validation

    Allow: Custom

    Uncheck: Ignore Blank

Enter this formula (this is for A1 having to have contents. Change to suit your data)
    Formula: copy to clipboard

If your cells are in a column then you can select the cell with the Data Validation and fill down just like you would any ordinary formula.

Experiment a little to see how you can adapt this to your data.

O that's really good. I should have thought of that. Thanks, way easier than I was making it.
