Post Grouping ID's which are in close LAT/LONG Proximity to one another

    Hi All,

So, I have attached a spreadsheet with ID's and random LAT/LONG Coordinates for help. I need to group the ID's which are in close proximity to one another, within 300 yards or so. from one another. I'd like to group ID's of two or more together per proximity location.

Example of me doing it manually is on the second tab which is pretty tedious even after some of the automation. Here, I first sorted by LAT then LONG and did some delta's from the number above/below and took the minimum. That told me if that ID was in close proximity to either the ID above or below. It does not tell me which one it was closer to. This would help me group it to the above ID or to the below ID. I then do some comparing and put 0 or 1 if similar then do some manual look-up. Step in the right direction but not quite there.

Any help guidance on how best of achieve this that'd be great. I'll be having to do this on a weekly/bi-weekly basis and am trying to put some automation to this at least with simply identifying the groups. Phase two will be to learn how to import all new data and rerun as what may be single ID in proximity one week may not be single proximity next week so would like to identify this, however this will come after I can get this first step working and hone in on the exact area I'd like to group together vs. apart.

Sorry if this isn't explained very well, can try to elaborate further with questions one may have.

    Thanks a lot as always!

Suppose you had 100 points on a 10 x 10 regular grid spaced 100 m apart. How would they be grouped?

    Hi Shg,

The 100m is right in the middle of whether I would want that grouped as a single group vs. a 100 seperate groups. I would probably look at the points as a group to see if I could correlate otherwise (most likely) they would be analyzed individually.

Suppose I had 40 points on the same 10 x 10 regular grid space location and you take 10 points and group 4 squares. The squares would be the "black" spaces on a checkered board. Each black space would be a single group with 10 ID's making up that group for a total of 4 groups.

    Does that make sense?

Clustering points is a very complex subject. See, for example http://cs.nyu.edu/~dsontag/courses/m.../lecture14.pdf.

I have no experience and therefore no suggestion.
