Random Generator causing havoc on my Vocabulary Words

I created a vocabulary list with their definitions in separate cells. I did this for the purpose of studying, and to test my limited skills in Excel.

I have it so that when I open the Excel document, a definition is randomly displayed in cell C4. In cell C10, I enter the word I think matches the current definition.

In cell C7, I have an IF statement that confirms if I typed the correct word for the current definition. Everything works fine, except for the way Excel generates random numbers.

The issue is when I type the vocabulary word for the current definition and press enter; Excel recalculates, thus displaying a new definition, without confirming if the current word I entered was correct. The only way I can confirm the word I entered is correct is to press F9 repeatedly, until the original definition comes back around. I am then congratulated for the correct answer.

I have researched the issue slightly, and realize I may need to create a unique function that will generate random numbers statically.

I've never created a function, so any suggestions will be appreciated, greatly!

Mike

Another way would be to set calcs to manual, then after you have entered your answer, F2/enter on the cell that will display the actual answer
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

No, that does not work, but thank you for suggesting it.

It still changes the definition when you hit F9 (you said F2, I assume you meant F9). I tried F2 for giggles with no luck though.

When Excel calculates, whether it's set to automatic or manual calculations, it causes the definition to change since it is based off of the rand function. In which case I am never told if the word I entered is correct, since the definition changes, and thus expects a different word or answer. Unless I leave the current word in the answer box and keep pressing F9 until I see the definition pop up, will I finally get a confirmation that the word is correct.

For now I have the answer displayed in a cell in the far right corner of Excel, which is barely out of my peripheral vision. So I can type what I think the answer is in the answer box, then glance to the right and confirm if it is correct. That's old school for sure!

Any other suggestions or workarounds are welcomed.

No, I did mean F2 (edit). F9 will recal the whole WB. If you F2/enter on a cell, only that cell gets recal'd

ok, I tried it again, but this time I pressed F2+Enter on the C7 cell that I have the If Condition for responding with the right or wrong message.

It worked! It finally congratulated me for a correct answer without having to cycle through all the definitions. Though I wished I didn't have to click in that particular cell and press F2+Enter, I would prefer to press F2+Enter while in the same answer box after typing the answer. I assume it is impossible to have the If Condition in the same cell that I would have to type the answer?

Thanks again for the F2 suggestions, still better than my old school way.
