Excel page layout and user profile problems

    Hello all, (first post)
I am having a problem with printing from excel.
There is a user in the office who when prints always has their right margins larger than everyone else's. If we log into the same computer under a different account everything is fine.
So, I have tried a repair and I have also tried to remove registry keys
"Office/14.0/Excel" and running repair again and still no luck. Is there a set of instructions for the users profile somewhere that I can wipe out in order to force excel to rebuild said profile on start up?
[ I should mention, the margins are set the same as everyone elses, it is set by a document's properties ]
    Thank you!

Using the profile that has wider right margins, open an Excel file that will demonstrate the problems. Click on Margins, Custom Margins, Options, Profiles (if you have this) and check for Staple Side. This is a setting that gives an extra margin for stapling document pages so that the margins appear correct when stapled. This should have a margin setting of 0. Anything else will shove the right margin left resulting in a large right margin. If it is not 0 the setting will have to be changed in the printer driver.

Thank you for your response, I checked the settings for the stapler and they were set to off.
    More information for this...

This is only happening when this user "move or copy"s a border and title block template that is set up for their department's needs into another sheet.
If they open the template directly it prints fine.

They have their way of doing things and who am I to get in the way. That being said, once again, this work flow works on everyone else in the departments computer and if we sign in under a different profile on this users computer it works fine too.

    Basically workflow is as follows...
1- Open a table from (n)table generating department.
2- Open the title block / default border template sheet.
3- "move or copy" this template into the sheet from step one.
4- as soon as it is in the first sheet if you do a print preview, it shows that the right margin is quite a bit larger.
note* if they print preview the original template from step 2 it show the margins correctly
5- "copy as image" the table from step one into the new page in the same document that contains the imported template.
    6- re-size and print.

Also it might help to know that after the initial import of the template file, if you look at the page breaks it shows that the template runs past the bottom of the page break, on other users pc's it shows that the page runs out to the right of the page breaks and not the bottom....

    Thanks again!

Seeing that all works fine for everyone except this one person on that person's computer, and given the added details in your last message, I would try creating a new user account on the computer. If that new user account can use the Excel file correctly, then I really suspect that the user account with the problems is somehow corrupted. A new user account might be in order for the user.

    I agree in whole. :D
Is there any way that you know of to remove just the Office or Excel profile for that specific user without trashing their entire profile.
I don't think re-installing office will do it

I can tell you by experience that re-installing Office is unlikely to solve the problem. I don't think that you can repair the areas of the profile that are just related to Office.

Read up on creating a new user account to replace a corrupted one....it has been too long for me to remember the steps but it wasn't difficult. It has to be done correctly though in the correct order.

Well lucky for me we are using AD so i will just rename it and start over. Shouldn't be too much to transfer. Some printers, desktop shortcuts, Outlook setup and maaaybe some pictures.

I will give that a try and report back.

    Thanks again for your input.

If you set up an Administrator account, you should be able to copy the desktop as it is just a folder, the folders should also copy without much trouble.

About renaming: Make sure that the account gets properly renamed before continuing. I renamed an account and the rename didn't take properly. I should have rebooted into the renamed account to be sure that it was all there but I didn't and when I didn't need the name anymore, I went to delete it and that is when I discovered a real mess and couldn't delete.

Before I forget, make an IMAGE of the computer before starting so that you can return to "start" if something goes off the rails.

    Good luck.

Recreating the user account on the computer in question worked.
It would be nice if there was a way to just reset the Office profile for the user.

    Thanks for the info

That could re-install the problem as you really don't know where the problem originated.

Re: Excel page layout and user profile problems

Oh lordy... I hope you are still watching this thread...
After we reset the user profile everything was fine. After a while the user complained that the text and icons were too small so we changed the settings under "Appearance and Personalization -> Display -> Make text and other items larger or smaller" from the default smaller to "Medium - 125%".
After this change the issues came back. To test this theory I returned the settings to "Smaller - 100% (default)", and the print issue went away and all was well.
What sort of spin does this put on the issue?
This is mystifying to say the least.

Re: Excel page layout and user profile problems

Problems like this are a real pain and can drive one crazy.

Did the text and icons suddenly become too small or were they too small to start with and the user just didn't complain?

If the monitor has separate manual controls, make sure that they are set properly and not at odds with what the computer has set for graphics display. A mis-match between display refresh and resolution between monitor and computer can really mess things up. (usually with old monitors that had a set of manual controls)

Can you delete the printer driver from the Control Panel, Device Manager and then reboot and re-install?

If the other user accounts act the same way after much usage, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a hardware failure about to happen. You could do this by setting up the user with the problem on another computer and then trading computers for a while.

Re: Excel page layout and user profile problems

After thinking about this for a while, if the above doesn't work or not practical to try, you might be further ahead to backup all the data on the computer and re-install Windows from scratch. You will probably save time in the end over trying to find some obscure thing that is causing the problem.
