Conditional formatting based on preceding cell in a series of columns

I have a worksheet that contains the dates /days of the month in a row header (a single row using 31 columns for each day of the month) and asset numbers in a single column on the left. Next to this column of assets is a column reserved for mileage "starting" and "ending". Since I am using starting and ending mileage in two cells on top of other I merged the asset column cells into a single cell for a single entry (i.e. 29332, 49563, etc.) The intent of this worksheet checks to make sure the starting value for the next day matches the ending value for the previous day. If the entries do not match conditional formatting highlights the two cells forcing the user to readjust the entry to clear the worksheet and /or find out why there is a discrepancy in the mileage reported by the driver. Is it possible to use conditional formatting in this format?

This is the worksheet with mileage on same row as Richard suggested earlier today:

Could you please post the sheet on the forum? External links are unsafe and not everyone can access them. Cheers

Ahh, the dreaded words 'merged cells'. The first thing I'd suggest is get rid of them. They just complicate things too much and cause too many problems with all sorts of functionality for reasons we needn't go into at the moment. Put your start and end mileage in two adjacent cells on the same row rather than adjacent in the same column.

Would you upload the file here rather than onedrive.

I rearranged the file so that starting and ending mileage are vertical instead of horizontal.
