Excel keeps changing cell formatting to date

Hi,

Both when I open a file with lists of numbers (e.g. 1253746) and when I copy and paste numbers into cells, excel automatically changes it to a date format.

Is there a setting to change this I don't have to "format cells" each time it happens?
