    issues creating a graph

im trying to create a graph from a table that have but It will be easier to let you see what I have rather than explain it all.

Anyway, the problem that I am having is labeling the graphs correctly. I need the y axis to represent caffeine and ethanol and the x axis to represent the % change in heart rate. In the case of the ethanol graph, i would like the axis title to be above the graph, and honestly, im not sure where to put the axis title for caffeine but it looks messy the way it is. also, there is a red line which indicates a second data series, but i have no idea why its there or how to remove it.

I apologise if these are really simple/stupid questions but Im a complete novice when it comes to excel and only use it when i really have to, so trying to navigate my way around is a nightmare.

i uploaded the wrong work book, and i cant see an option to remove the one already attached, or to add the correct one. this is the correct work book with the graphs i have already.

If I understand what you are trying to do, you are trying to chart based on a table where the y values are to the left of the x values. Excel "assumes" that the x values will be to the left, so you get the incorrect results you see. Since Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, got rid of the chart wizard, you must become familiar with the "Select Data" dialog in the Design Tab of the Chart Group. From this dialog, you can add or remove data series, and you can edit series to reflect the desired data to be plotted.

Another observation, you are using a line chart. At first glance, I would expect a scatter chart would be more suitable. Review this resource and decide which chart type you really want. http://peltiertech.com/line-charts-vs-xy-charts/

    Re: issues creating a graph

to be honest, all i want is a graph that accurately displays the data in those tables. Ive been sat here for 5 hours randomly clicking things in excel trying to make 1 stupid graph. I could have had this done in 10 mins if i could just plot it onto some graph paper.

Thanks for your help, but i think i must be mentally challenged when it comes to excel because none of it makes sense to me.

When you say, "none of it makes sense to me", how much is "none"? I have assumed that you have enough experience with recent MS products to be familiar with the "ribbon" interface, and how to select items on the ribbon. Is this a valid assumption, or do you need help understanding MS's "new" (as of 2007 or so) user interface?

If you select your chart, do you see the "Chart Tools" group on the ribbon? Under Chart tools should be "Design". On the "Design" ribbon, there should be a "Select Data" button. Does that much make sense?

    Re: issues creating a graph

i know some basics, but beyond that everything is completely foreign to me. Its frustrating because i know exactly what I want to do, but cant figure out how to do it lol.

Ive had my brother on the phone and he has managed to talk me through some things, and with his help, ive managed to make 2 graphs and 2 tables. however he's had to go to work and the graph for caffeine looks odd because the test for 5 mg of caffeine was done twice, with vastly different results. this is due to an error done during testing, but I would like to leave that data in. Is there anyway to leave the datapoint in the graph, but not have it connected to the rest of the data series, if that makes any sense?

IMO, the easiest way is to have the "error" point be a separate series. Go into the "select data" dialog, edit the existing series so it does not include the final point. Then add a new series for this "error" point.
