    Conditional Formatting - can you replace specific text with other text?

    This may be straightforward or impossible.....I use an excel doc for a rota/planner. One row only ever contains various staff names. This might seem lazy but can I use conditional formatting to automatically replace first names with full names eg if I type "john" could it immediately change it to "John Smith"?

    I'm aware I would have to tell it all the potential replacements but there are only about 10 names so would love to know if it's possible.

    The reason I want it is because I have a macro that generates an email involving names in this row so they need to be formalised/consistent.

    Many thanks.

    No.
    Conditional formatting does just that - changes the FORMAT of the cell under certain conditions.
    You're talking about changing the VALUE of the cell, not the format.

    You can achieve what you want either with an IF formula or possibly a lookup table depending on what you want.

    You're better off providing a few examples of what you have and the output you're trying to achieve.

    Ensure you describe your problem clearly, I have little time available to solve these problems and do not appreciate numerous changes to them.

    Agreed with @Special K..

    @teus82 -
    Welcome to the Forum..

    Conditional formatting only format your cell or range based on conditions. Whereas your requirement is more like Vlookup because even IF won't work if you would long list for your database.

    Also, to get multiple ways of doing it, please upload your XLS file for better clarity.
