how could i use a pivot table to do this? have i done it wrong?

Sales figures - This will be populated via the Save button on Sheet 6

    i. Use Pivot Tables to allow the user to view the Sales data by:
    • Customer
    • Customer Town/City
    • Date
ii. Create 2 different charts to show the data and display on Sheets 8

I suspect you are not clear on how pivot tables work, and also suspect your data layout is working against you. But in this case a screenshot doesn't help (it rarely does). We can't see how your data is organized or how you created your pivot table. I can't even tell if there is a pivot table at all here. Can you attach your Excel file?

First, this appears to be some sort of homework assignment. We do have a policy that we don't do your homework for you, but I will be happy to address specific questions.

You do not have a pivot table here. The first thing you have to do is figure out what data you are going to use for the source of your pivot table, then create three pivot tables (the description sounds like they are looking for three separate pivot tables). It looks like the source data should be "Sales Figures", but that data doesn't show customer name or city. I think you need to add two more columns to Sales Figures that use VLOOKUP to retrieve the customer name and city from the Customers sheet, based on the customer number.

You do not seem to have customer city anywhere at all, just postal code. So I don't know how you will be able to show customer city in a pivot table.

How much do you understand about pivot tables? You might need to read up on that a little. Tutorials online will do a much better job explaining them than I could do in a forum post.

I think you have some confusion about what you are being asked to do. It is important to understand exactly what the assignment is asking for before jumping into solving it.

Your description starts with, "Use Pivot Tables to allow the user to view the Sales data by" but I see no sales data anywhere in your file. To produce these kinds of pivot tables, you need to have a table with sales data someplace. The sales data would include, at a minimum, the following columns:

    Customer
    Customer Town
    Sale Date
    Sale Amount

Once you have that data, you can build three pivot tables from that data.

I have used the data in your file to add tabs to show how this could work. The tabs I added are colored red. This is a very simple example and you may need to consider more data to correctly solve your overall problem.
