Need workbook to track attendance and then total dates of occurrence based on student

I have an excel workbook that is used to track attendance of student detentions. It's a simple ongoing list with Student Name and date. I am wanting to total dates of occurrence by student on another sheet (while showing which dates they attended). Can someone help me with this?

I have attached the file. There is not a sheet set up for what I am wanting to do though because I don't know the best way to do it. What you will see on the spreadsheet is a list that we keep track of students who come in to detention. What I want to do is have another sheet that shows the student, the total dhalls that student has and I'd like it to show the dates too....but that's a must...I just would like it. I have no idea how to go about this...or if there might be a better way to do this. I'm open to any suggestions....appreciate any help! Thanks!

When you say you want the second sheet to show the total dhalls, as well as dates, how exactly do you wish to have that presented? Because doesn't tallying the attendances defeat the purpose of showing which days they were in detention?

Check the attached workbook and see if that will work for you. On the second sheet, you will need to add a comprehensive list of all 6th graders, and drag the formula in column B of the same sheet down through it. The rest should take care of itself.

YES...that will work but I have a problem. I added the list of student names on the calculations sheet. I copied the formula all the way
down, however, it's not pulling the number of dhalls from the other sheet. Did I do something wrong? I attached the new file. Thanks so much for your help!

Try this formula for the first name on the second sheet:

The problem was that the original sheet you provided has names in a different format than the one you attached (Lastname, Firstname vs. Firstname Lastname), but I believe the formula I attached alleviates that.

However, there are compatibility issues with some versions of Excel regarding this, so if it does not work for you, let me know.

I'm so sorry...it still doesn't work. I tried playing with it but I couldn't get it to work. I did notice there was another formula ( an if then formula) in a blank square and didn't know if that had anything to do. I would love to be an expert in excel but this is way out of my league....so if I retype the names in first name, last name format and use the first formula, that should work?

Yes, it should if you change the names to that format. I'll take a look at it again in the morning (10:50pm my time) when I'm at a more Excel friendly computer.
