Structured reference to external data table gives '#REF' when source file is closed

Does anyone know a workaround for the problem of a structured reference to an external data table returning '#REF', when the source file is closed?

Other than a) open the source file or b) replace with standard (relative or absolute) references.

A Microsoft article on the problem can be found here.

The reference that you supplied says it all. The source is REQUIRED to be open or you will get the error.

There may be a VBA solution that can retrieve the data. Perhaps someone with VBA experience can answer.
