Auto fill and holding CTRL backwards

I'm used to dragging the number 1 down and seeing:
    1
    2
    3
    4
    5

    Or holding CTRL and seeing
    1
    1
    1
    1
    1

Now it's backwards, how ever it's not backwards for dates.

If I put in Jan an drag down I get
    Jan
    Feb
    Mar

Or holding down CTRL I get:
    Jan
    Jan
    Jan

Tried turning auto fill on and off, not sure what I'm missing.

    Thanks

Don't think by dragging just the number 1 you would get 1,2,3,4,5.. You will need atleast 1,2 to drag down to get that pattern..

You won't need to Hold Ctrl and then drag down if you have just 1.. It will fill 1 everywhere if you have just 1..

Secondly, not sure what is going on with dates? Can you explain what exactly you require?

For me at least, all these while, dragging the number 1 down will end up with a series of 1s. Holding the CTRL key will increment it by 1.

To the best of my knowledge, when dealing with VALUES (or numbers), dragging it down while holding the CTRL key will increment it by 1.

For lists however, like Jan, Feb, Mar.... These are considered under Custom List. (Excel Options --> Popular --> Edit Custom Lists...)

Pressing the CTRL key here will tell Excel to ignore the custom list.

As to the original problem, i.e. swapping the CTRL key and dragging down functionality, I have no clue.
