Compatability issue? - Excel 2007 to Excel 2013

Hi All,

I am stumped with some recent issues affecting the performance of several workbooks I used routinely. I created them in Excel 2007 and have no issues with the workbook; however, when using in Excel 2013 I have delayed calculation times and general response issues making the workbook basically useless, particularly when the PC crashes as a result.

Can anyone suggest any reasons that might cause this problem? I've had our IT group check and recheck the computers I am using - I have an almost 5-year old machine that can run the sheet in Excel 2007 without a drama, but a current computer running Excel 2013 is basically incapable.

There are no external references or macros running as all calculation is done within the sheet itself.

All suggestions and advice very much appreciated - my old computer is only just hanging in there (and so am I).

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Compatability issue? - Excel 2007 to Excel 2013

The first time you open a file that was last saved in a previous version of Excel, the file is completely recalculated.

Starting with Excel 2000, Excel forces a complete recalculation of all workbooks that are opened if they were previously saved in an earlier version of Excel, regardless of the link-update status. To fully recalculate the workbook, Excel forces updates of all external references as well, even if you choose not to update when you are prompted to. This process occurs because Excel is updating the workbook calculation chain to the current version.

Maybe the reason for your workbook slowing down..
Cheers!

I have 2007, 2010 and 2013 - 2013 runs the same files, significantly slower. It is a far more involved program, doing (apparently) much more. There is another thread some place on the forum where other members have complained about the performance of '13 compare to earlier versions.

I think some of it may have to do with the fancy animation in some areas. I will try and dig out that other thread and post the link here
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

I see a lot of complaining as well.. However, I notice my files to run a bit faster on the 2013 version..

Besides, the workbook size is also a bit smaller with the 2013 version..

If your computer has decent hardware specs, I don't think the versions make a big difference at all..

But what you are saying is definitely true -

It is a far more involved program, doing (apparently) much more

Re: Compatability issue? - Excel 2007 to Excel 2013

For closure on this issue, it turned out that Excel 2013 could not cope with the volume and type of conditional formatting I had used in my original Excel 2010 version. I had to remove a lot of the conditional formatting and find alternatives. This immediately cleared up my issues.
