Excel variable drop down list, affects values in other cells that reference it

I have created a list of variables, or string entries, that i want to have the user select the order of (did so using the data consolidate>list method) . I have a column that I want to list a value based on that entry selected. The only way I can think of doing this is through manually typing in every single variable and it's value as an if else statement. That seems wrong simply by how cumbersome it would be for a 50+ variable list. What is the correct method?

You would normally use a VLOOKUP formula to do this (or possibly an INDEX/MATCH combination, depending on how your data is laid out). It is difficult to advise you more fully without any details of how your data is laid out - perhaps you should attach a sample Excel workbook.
