Formula to set up running total ?

I have a column of various numbers. Does anyone know how to set up a formula so i get a running total of these numbers in the next column. The first sum would be the first number plus the second number... the next would be the first plus second plus third number, etc

    Thanks

Let's assume your figures start at cell C1.

    In cell D1 type =C1

    In cell D2 type =D1+C2

Copy this down to the end

Alternatively, use =IF(ISBLANK(C12),"",D11+C12) instead of =D1+C2 and you can copy this down to the number of future rows that may be used without having the last balance displayed n number of times.

    Cheers!

Re: Formula to set up running total ?

I'm having a problem doing this. In the example above I would do the steps listed, but when I would select D1 and D2, and pull the little black square in the lower right corner of the selected cells, downward, it would only copy the contents of the feeder cells, like C3, C4, etc, but not add them for a running total. Some of my numbers were negative, also, as in -$2.57 for example.
If I did the formula by hand all the way down, it works fine. But I'm not able to drag & copy it down. I tried doing it with the format painter brush, but that didn't seem to work. What do you suppose I'm doing wrong, that it won't copy the formula down when I drag the selected cells? Thanks for your help!
