Looking up all the child values associated with one parent value

    Hello All,

I have workbook that has a list of parent values and child values. I am trying to associate all the child values to the one parent value.
For example, in column A, I have a list of names (Parent value). In column B, I have Sports Played (child values).
If I wanted to capture all the sports that John plays, is there a formula for me to do that? I have attached an example worksheet.

Just by glancing at the table, I know John plays Baseball, Football, and Tennis.
I have tried using a simple Vlookup, but I'm unable to capture all the values.

    Excel Forum Example.xlsx

    Thanks,

    Hi cwwazy,

See if a quick Pivot Table helps with your answer.

    Hi Marvin,

Thanks for the quick response. Any other way to do it without having to do a pivot table? I am trying to capture the cells without having to manually pivot and looking at the results?

Using your posted workbook....here are two approaches:

    Pivot Table
    • select the data range (A1:B10
    • Insert.Pivot Table.Table
    ...Select a destination...Click: OK
...Drag Name to the Report Filter
...Drage Sports Played to the Row Labels

Select a name and the Pivot table will list the sports for that name

    Formulas:
    E1: Name
    F1: a name to use...Adam
    G1: Sports Played

This formula, copied down, lists the sports for that name

Is that something you can work with?

    Hi,

What do you want the answer to look like? If you include that on your sample attached file, it might be possible to accomplish what you wish.
